Infuse YOU into your Wedding ~ Michelle A Photo

How to Infuse YOU into your Wedding

I have been a wedding photographer for just over 9 years. In that time I have captured well over 100 weddings and have seen some pretty cool and unique ways couples have infused themselves into their day! One of my absolute favourite things I see at weddings is how couples bring themselves and their personalities into their special day. So I figured, why not put a helpful blog post together of my 5 best tips for how you can make your wedding day totally and completely YOU!

1. Include your Dog

Do you and your partner have a dog or dogs together? Why not include them in your special day! There are several ways to include your furry best friend in your wedding day plans. What a better way to infuse more of yourselves and relationship then to include your fur baby!

Some of the easiest ways to have your dog(s) included are;

  • Have them tag along to your engagement session, it is an easy way to include them in this exciting time in your lives without fully committing to them being at your wedding.
  • Consider including them in the getting ready portion of the day.
  • Have your dog be your flower girl or ring bearer at your wedding. Why not infuse them right into your ceremony by having them be part of your wedding party!

2. Add your Personality into your Grand Entrance

One of the major events during a wedding reception is the grand entrance of the wedding party and couple! Usually this kicks off the reception and gets the night going, so why not take this opportunity to add your personality to your first introduction as a married couple.

  • Choose to enter to your favourite song, that is what my husband and I did, we entered our reception to System of a Down!
  • Do you go golfing together every weekend? Why not use your bouquet to show off your best golf swing?
  • Enter with your favourite drink in hand or even dance your way in!
  • Why not throw on some pretty awesome dinosaur masks and surprise all of your guests!

No matter how you decide to enter into your reception, take the opportunity to add more of your personality as a couple into your day by having fun with it!

3. Surprise your Guests with your First Dance

If you have ever attended a wedding, you know the first dance as a married couple is a staple of wedding days! Whether you choose to do your dance right after your entrance into your reception or wait until after dinner, chances are it will be a part of your timeline!

So…is a slow dance just not for you? Then whoever said it needs to be slow! Maybe you want to do your entrance and kick off the party with an upbeat song and dance.

Or perhaps you have your dance set for later in the evening, a slow song kicks off your dance and BAM your DJ switches to a fast song surprising your guests and showing off your fun personality together!

Maybe none of this appeals to you and you are set on having your first dance be more traditional. Why not choose a special song from your relationship together, do you have that one song you have deemed as yours? Why not choose that to dance too.

In my case, when my husband and I got married we chose a song by Metric, it also happened to the song that was playing when he asked me to be his girlfriend! It made our first dance so special having a song that has been a part of our relationship for so many years play during such a special moment at our wedding!

4. Customize your Reception Details

One of the simplest ways to infuse yourself and relationship into your wedding day is in the details! Details from getting ready into the reception are a huge part of planning a wedding and a great opportunity to personalize almost everything!

From custom cufflinks (check out Etsy for everything from superhero to car themes) to table numbers featuring relationship milestones. There are a ton of options, here are some of my favourites I have seen at weddings over the years,

  • Pet portraits as photo-booth props.
  • Table numbers, each table featuring relationship milestones.
  • Customized guestbook.
  • Cake toppers.
  • Signature drinks.
  • Customized details, cufflinks, hanger for wedding dress or suit jacket, socks, engraved watch.
  • Guest favours. Custom M&M’s.

There are endless ways to personalize your wedding details, think about what is important to you and what you love to do together.

Do you love Disney? Maybe Marvel is your thing, or you watch a lot of hockey together. Why not figure out how you can bring these things you love into your wedding day!

5. Celebrate your Relationship Milestones

My last suggestion is to take time and think about how you can infuse your relationship and its milestones into your day. I mean, that is how you got to your wedding in the first place right?

Some of my favourite ways I have seen couples include their most important relationship moments in their weddings,

  • Displaying photos from your relationship and even notes or other important items.
  • Having a custom sign made showing your dating, engagement and wedding anniversary dates.
  • Custom table numbers showcasing memories together.
  • Play a game! He said/She said & The Shoe Game.
  • Including songs that are meaningful to certain times in your relationship.
  • Telling the story of how you first met or how you got engaged in your wedding speech.

No matter how you decide to include your precious memories together, it is a great way to show your guests more of who you are as a couple.

Sincerely,

Michelle
