Vendor Spotlight Devorah Beauty! ~ London Ontario Makeup Artist

Vendor Spotlight: Devorah Beauty

London Ontario Makeup Artist

Guys! Something I have been working on for a month or so is finally making it’s way onto the blog, vendor spotlights! I wanted to start being able to not only spotlight the vendors who I adore and love working with, I also wanted to start showing how amazing they are on my blog to refer them to my awesome readers and couples!

First up is Anna! The owner of Devorah Beauty, a makeup artist here in London Ontario. I travelled over to her studio here in Old East Village to take some lovely photos of her little studio space and of course her doing her thing!

I also did a little interview with Anna for you to get to know her better!

So lets begin,

1) First, tell me a little about yourself

I’m a Londoner, raised in Wortley Village. I went to South Secondary, took as many art classes as possible, had a stint at Fanshawe in Interior Decorating, and finally ended up at King’s University College where I completed my Honours Specialization in English Literature. I have always been more comfortable studying the fine arts, and the written word has always captivated me. Although I didn’t know where my path would take me, its no surprise to family and myself that I ended up somewhere creative. I feel entirely blessed that my career and my passion have become one in the same.

2) Tell me a little about your business, how you got started? How many years have you been in business?

Devorah Beauty became official in May of 2015. Makeup was always something I loved, but never really considered a career option until I had finished university and didn’t know what to do with my degree. I think a lot of people have that problem. It’s a scary thing, wandering away from standard expectations and attempting to make a life out of something you love. But I had this feeling that I’d never experienced before; I knew this was it. I poured my heart and soul into my craft. I am constantly seeking improvement in myself and only ever want to provide the best service possible for my clients.

3) What made you want to start your own business in the wedding industry?

Weddings are so exciting. I personally have been in three! And I loved dressing up, having my hair and makeup done, and feeling red carpet glamorous. I think with makeup, weddings come as part of the territory. But I have zero complaints! Being a part of my client’s biggest day is so rewarding in so many ways: we are able to establish a relationship beforehand through email correspondence, meet for a trial and get the look just right, and then spend the morning together with her family and closest friends. The whole process is exciting. I have met so many phenomenal women through the wedding industry and I am so blessed to have kind hearted, thoughtful clients that make my work feel like a privilege.

I can’t even begin to explain the feeling I get when a bride sees her final look; when the hair, makeup and dress finally come together and she is transformed. There’s something really special about watching her come into her own and finally seeing herself as a bride, the bride she has been dreaming about for months, years, possibly her whole life! And I love that I can be a part of the process that gives her a confidence that is so unique and beautiful to each bride.

5) What is your favourite wedding trend in your industry for the 2017/2018 year?

HIGHLIGHTER!!! This trend has been around for a while now and isn’t going anywhere! I don’t always think trends are the best thing to go with for a wedding look (eg, a dark vampy look – will you really be happy you chose that in 20 years?). However, highlighter is one of those transforming products that brings such a healthy glow to the skin. It will give you that beam of light that will have everyone saying, “you are glowing!”. Dewy, lit-from-within, ethereal, bridal, stunning, glowy beauty. I can’t get enough. Top two wedding highlights (depending on skin tone): Urban Decay Afterglow in Sin and Becca Cosmetics Moonstone. Brb drooling.

Take care of your skin! And I don’t mean anything drastic, like a facial or peel that’s going to wreck your skin before the most important day of your life. I mean spend the months leading up to your wedding by figuring out what works for you. Use a gentle exfoliator to keep your skin fresh. Wear sunscreen DAILY, all year round. Hydrate, drink water, and don’t sleep in your makeup! I know this seems like the last thing on your mind, but makeup will only ever look as good as the canvas underneath it. Make a habit of treating your skin well!

7) Share one of your favourite moments or stories from a wedding day or client!

There was a wedding I did the makeup for, fairly early on in my career. I clicked with the bride (we are still in touch to this day), and her wedding party, like her, was fabulous. We chatted makeup all morning. But the memorable moment for me was a totally candid shot I took of her, sliding her wedding shoes on, looking so effortlessly stunning it blew my mind. I realized what I was really part of, that I was able to witness these delicate moments before my client’s life changed forever. I hold onto that photo, because in some way, it feels like a defining moment in my career. She’s timeless and beautiful, an intimate juncture before all eyes are on her. The significance it holds to me reminds me of the privilege I have to connect with these wonderful people and prep them for their moment

Hobbies?

When I’m not doing makeup, I work part time at a restaurant. I just can’t get away from it! I love the fast paced environment and the people I work with and for. And the food. I am a big foodie! I’m so lucky that my boyfriend cooks for a living – I am spoiled with his delicious creations! I definitely enjoy cooking with him. I also love to walk my dog – I know that seems like such a boring response, but it’s become my personal time. I won’t bring my phone, and it’ll just be him and I, enjoying nature as we’re supposed to. I truly believe that we need to unplug at least once a day and remember to be human!

9) Anything else you would like to add?

I want to stress that makeup is for fun. None of us need it to be prettier, or better people. What I love about makeup is the process, the feeling of pampering yourself and taking time for you. I love the artistic expression of blending, mixing, creating. I never want my clients to feel like a “different person”, I want to use my passion as a tool to expose them to the true beauty they already possess. And to just have fun with it! xo
