2020 Year In Review

Happy New Year take 2! Today on the blog I am sharing a 2020 year in review and all about the very interesting year that we all just experienced, needless to say 2020 was one heck of a ride for everyone and I am excited to get this new year started! Of course, I always love to reminisce and share all about the previous year at the beginning of a new one on the blog and this will be quite a long post. At the beginning of 2020 I was suppose to have 20 weddings to capture, 11 ended up postponing while the rest still went on with their wedding dates as planned while adhering to covid rules and changing up their plans more times they I could count. No matter what my amazing 2020 couples decided I did my best to be as accommodating and helpful as I could. This pandemic was a completely new experience for absolutely everyone and I cannot thank my amazing couples and clients enough for being so amazing to work with over the past year!

I know having to reschedule, change plans and change them again when the government put new rules in place and uninvite important people from events was not easy and my heart goes out to all of those who had to deal with planning any sort of event over the year. No matter what 2020 threw at my couples they all handled it with grace and I was so grateful to be able to capture 14 amazing weddings! I also got to capture lots of engagement and family sessions though the year and even did more family sessions then I typically do.

Within all the downsides to 2020, plans and trips were cancelled, concerts postponed and future plans put on the back burner due to less income and no certainty on when things will get better, there were some silver linings to the year as well. I got to celebrate 7 years of this little business of mine and am so thankful that I already have 19 weddings on the books for this 2021 wedding season. I along with some amazing wedding vendors were featured in Hitched Wedding Magazine in the spring and I got to experience so many special days despite covid!

I have chosen some favourite photos from each wedding and session that I got to be apart of this year as well as some of my favourite moments (which I will explain more about as you scroll through). I also have included some never before shared behind the scenes photos taken by some of my amazing second shooters and friends! So please enjoy a little glimpse to the Michelle A Photography 2020 season and here it so starting fresh with a new year!

First up are some of my favourite photos from my 2020 engagement and family sessions as well as my lovely weddings! I even got to capture a handful of new things last year, a sweet surprise proposal, some elopement photos for some good friends and a best friend photoshoot with their pets!

I also wanted to add some of my favourite memories to this blog post which is something I haven’t shared before in previous year in reviews. So below are some of my favourite 2020 session and wedding memories with a little explanation of each!

First up, I met up with Brooke and Remco on his family farm back at the end of August. When I arrived they told me we would be doing some photos with a baby cow and I could have cried! She was the cutest thing ever and it was such a fun and new experience for me!

During Danielle and Dan’s backyard ceremony in September their sweet daughter Scarlett stole the show! With her little flower girl dress and matching boots to her mom she wandered around the ceremony being absolutely adorable. It was so cute watching her interrupt her parents as they said I Do and I think these are memories they will treasure forever!

Wedding recessionals are always one of my favourite parts of the ceremony to capture and one of my absolute favourites last year was Katie and Laura’s! Moments after the officiant pronounced them Mrs and Mrs, Laura yelled “hit it Dave” (Dave from DJ Alpha was their DJ and if you are looking for your DJ still I cannot recommend you check them out enough!) and they danced down the aisle together! I couldn’t help but laugh and smile their whole way down, it was such a loving and special moment!

One major highlight from last year was getting to capture a surprise proposal!! I had not captured a proposal since 2015 so it was so much fun to get to do one again, plus Brandon and Steph are two of the sweetest people I have ever met. It was such an honour to get to be apart of such a special moment in their relationship!

Wedding ceremonies always hit me right in the feels but going down in the history of my business for the sweetest ceremony is Meaghan and Zach’s. Their ceremony was filled with the sweetest stories of how they met, got engaged and what they love most about one another. They each wrote their own vows that made everyone in the room tear up and so many happy tears and laughs were shared!

Of course something I will never forget from 2020 is face masks! Who knew that masks would be the new trend for the 2020 wedding season and I loved how couples just embraced it and took some mask photos to remember the times of their wedding.

Another favourite moment comes from Samantha and Brendan’s engagement session in October. These two are so goofy together which I loved so we had to get some goofy photos, as I asked for Brendan to spin Samantha he expressed his interest in being spun as well. So naturally we had to do something a little different and grab some shots of the bride to be spinning the groom to be!

I loved that Jessica and Lucas took some time to get some photos of them in their wedding attire with their cats! I get to photograph dogs a lot but cats are few and far between.

Wedding ceremonies can be unpredictable especially when there are dogs involved. Well at Tiffany and Andrew’s wedding their sweet little dog Milo was the ring bearer. He began to make his way down the aisle after the flower girl but instead took a far out detour in the opposite direction! This led to Tiffany leaving her mom and brother to go running after Milo and get him back on the right track to the front of the aisle. It was so sweet and funny and will go down as one of my all time favourite ceremony moments!

And last but certainly not least, this is my favourite memory of the year. So as many of you may or may not know I am a huge RuPaul’s Drag Race fan and so is Julia, one of my amazing brides. We really bonded over our love of the show as we got closer to their wedding day and during getting ready she told me she had a video she had to show me. Her maid of honour had a video made of one of Julia and Matt’s favourite drag queens, Heidi N Closet wishing them a very happy wedding day and these photos my amazing second shooter Jocelyn from Aster and Lily Photography got are amazing! I was so shocked and it was such a crazy moment, the second she said Julia and Matt’s name in the video I clued into what was going on and got so excited!

Lastly here are some behind the scenes from a few wedding last year, I always love when my second shooters get some behind the scenes moments of me loving my job!
