Tips for your Winter Wedding ~ Michelle A Photo

Tips for your Winter Wedding

Winter has finally made it’s appearance here in Ontario after a few massive snow storms! I have had the pleasure of capturing a few winter weddings in my career and I adore them, snow always makes for the prettiest photos!

Once I got thinking about winter weddings, I realized that I have some helpful tips from my experiences that might help out planning couples! So if you are planning a winter wedding this blog post is for you, keep scrolling for 3 things you should consider when it comes to your winter wedding.

1. Pay Attention to the Time

This is hands down the number one thing I want to chat about and something that can easily get overlooked! If you are planning your wedding anytime after Daylights Savings (a.k.a the worst!) you will want to make sure you are paying lots of attention to your timeline. The sun sets so much earlier which means you will be running out of light way faster then you would a spring or summer wedding. If you are planning to have your ceremony at 3pm with no first look, your timing for photos will be extremely limited. I know one of the first things people will say is “there are lights inside” and while that may be true, in the photography world lighting is EVERYTHING! Ideally you will want to be able to get outside and use that beautiful winter light to your advantage.

2. Outdoor Wear

This one might be a no brainer but I think it is something worth mentioning. The last thing you are going to want is being outside in the snow shivering or having soaking feet during your portraits! I have seen brides incorporate fur shawls (you can purchase fake fur ones) and blanket scarves into their wedding attire to also keep themselves warmer during photo time. Plus why not rock a cute pair of boots under your dress? They will keep your feet nice and warm and no one will know what type of shoes you are really wearing!

3. Embrace the Cold

We live in Canada and it can get cold! But if you have plans for a winter wedding I am sure you will at least want to take advantage of the snowy backgrounds (cause they make for amazing images). Even if it is just for a short period of time, trust your photographer that you are going to want to get some portraits outdoors. For lighting sake and background sake, outdoors is always the better option and one your photographer will encourage you to go with every time if possible.
